A Brief History Of Jondaryan Shire
Jondaryan Shire was originally settled by the Giabel people (or "Condamine Men") who managed their grass-dominated homeland with fire, and a pathway for many other tribes travelling to regular feasts in the Bunya Mountains.

European settlement began in the 1840s with the establishment of Jondaryan Station and Westbrook Station (which between them covered most of what is now Jondaryan Shire), followed by the towns of Jondaryan and Oakey in the 1860s and 1870s.

Today Jondaryan Shire embraces the towns of Jondaryan, Oakey, Cotswold Hills, Torrington, Glenvale, Westbrook, Wyreema, Southbrook, Mt Tyson, Bowenville, Aubigny, Biddeston, Kingsthorpe, Gowrie Junction, Gowrie Mountain and is home to around 14,650 people.

Mayor's Message
Jondaryan Shire Mayor Cr. Peter TaylorWelcome to Jondaryan Shire -
The Perfect Place To Grow!
I'm delighted to welcome you to Jondaryan Shire's web site. Jondaryan Shire is located on the Darling Downs of Queensland, adjoining the City of Toowoomba and extending westwards to Dalby and Cecil Plains and southwards to Cambooya. It has an area 1906 sq. km. and a population approaching 14,000. Our Shire also has a growth rate of 2.4%, which is above the State average.

Right now significant new industry expansion is occurring in abattoirs, light manufacturing, road transport, grain and cotton seed processing and intensive animal feeding. All of this is happening alongside the traditional farming crops which are grown here on some of the most fertile soils in the world.

Jondaryan Shire's economic outlook for the future is also secure, with a recent analysis by the National Institute of Economic Research's rating it in the top 8% of Australia's 651 local government areas.

Our Shire's Unimproved Capital Value of $751,958,261 (as at September 2005) also makes Jondaryan the highest valued inland Shire in Queensland - a position we look set to retain with the extensive high quality rural residential and urban housing development currently being undertaken in the area.
